In
June 1984, the Syndicat national de la Librairie Ancienne et Moderne (SLAM), on
the initiative of its President Jeanne Laffitte, organised the first
International Antiquarian Book Fair in Paris, at the Conciergerie. In this historic
location (once prison to Marie-Antoinette), the success was considerable, and
every two years, booksellers from around the world began to make Paris a
regular destination to exhibit a wide range of precious works.
In 1993, the Fair
moved to the Maison de la Mutualité and in 1995 it became an annual event.
Since April 2007, the
glass-domed Grand Palais has been host to the Antiquarian Book Fair in
conjunction with the Original Print Fair. This magnificent setting provides a
unique occasion to become known to a wide public and makes this show an
exceptional cultural event.
Visitors can meander
along the traces of journeys taken by countless human minds over the course of
centuries. From manuscripts to avant-garde, from a letter by François I to the
drafts of Marcel Proust, from a XIIIth century psalm book to a futurist
manifesto, amateurs will be able to browse the shelves of an immense bookshop,
with thousands of stunningly diverse documents.
Salon du Livre -Paris
Book Fair , the most important cultural event in Europe, open to general
public, but also bringing together publishers, booksellers, teachers and
librarians to network, book signings for the public, more than 250 meetings and
conferences
The sheer diversity
of the book trade means that this fast changing sector continues to thrive. The
Paris Book Fair has been a key player in the book trade for 31 years now.
Like the book trade
itself, the Paris Book Fair has been repositioning itself over the past three
years in order to meet the needs and expectations of all industry players.
A strategic tool for
businesses, the Fair is a natural hub for both suppliers and consumers. As a
place for key players and industry observers to meet and do business, as well
as spot key trends, it is now a media platform in its own right.
2012 will be about
consolidating the new format with new features:
4 days open to the
public with Monday morning reserved for the book trade only.
An emphasis on institutional
partnerships with a particular focus on younger readers at elementary school,
high school and further education.
A rich cultural programme with over 3000
writers and over 500 meetings.
Consolidation of our
flagship events: the film market, the digital conference, the translation day,
the rights centre, the booksellers’ previews and company presentations for
small publishing houses…
